We’re Supporting Tuck in 2018

It’s 2018 and more than half of California’s 6.2 million public school students aren’t on grade level for math or reading. The numbers are even more distressing for low-income students and students of color.

It’s obvious: California is not delivering on the promise of public education.

But we believe that it can. That’s why we’re endorsing Marshall Tuck for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

For far too long, bureaucrats in Sacramento have shrugged their shoulders and dragged their feet at our children’s lagging achievement. The status quo was alright with them. That’s earned us nothing more than 50th place in the country in 4th grade math achievement for our low-income students. That’s not alright with us.

We believe that Marshall Tuck has the courage, the experience and the ideas to reject the status quo and renew the promise of public education for all of California’s children.

Investing in teachers

As a former educator and school leader, Marshall understands that teachers and principals are critical factors in a child’s success, so they’re worth serious investment. In addition to increasing teacher pay, Marshall’s vision for free college and credentialing for teachers can help ease California’s teacher shortage, especially in places like special education, which are historically difficult to staff.

Equitable school funding

Some students — like English learners, those in foster care, or  from low-income backgrounds — need more support in school. California’s school funding system, the Local Control Funding Formula, recognizes this by sending more dollars to districts with high numbers of these students.

However, the current system prevents the public from seeing how taxpayer dollars are spent at the school site level. That makes it impossible to know if the money is making it to the classroom, to the kids who need it the most.

We share Marshall’s belief that school districts should be required to report their spending at the school level, in an accessible and easy-to-understand format. This way, all Californians can see what’s working and what’s not for our students.

Excellent public school options

California’s constitution grants every child the right to a public education. But with the current status quo, too many children are stuck in failing schools, forced to attend simply because of where they live.

Every kid in California deserves excellent public school options, and Marshall supports the expansion of high-quality public options for communities that need them the most, so that kids no longer have to be stuck.

Whether this would be providing opportunities for excellent charter public schools, encouraging magnet programs and/or pursuing policies that allow students in failing schools to move to higher performing schools, we support Marshall’s vision for all California families.

The situation for California’s children is urgent. In a rapidly-evolving, technology-heavy world, California’s kids aren’t keeping up. In fact, data show that over 70% of California’s high school graduates would need remedial college courses in English or math.

It’s clear that education leaders in Sacramento haven’t had the courage to shake up the status quo and do what’s right for California’s children. But Marshall will. We hope you’ll join us in supporting him and being a part of #TeamTuck.
